ISML 2009 – Aquamarine 1 Results

19 03 2009

http://www.internationalsaimoe.com

And so ends the first round of aquamarine, and we can finally get a glimpse of each character’s potential strength.

… well, there was going to be ISML’s chart here, but I can’t post it cause it’s too big for the margins, lol.
Continuing…

From now on:

Bold -> Winner
Underline -> Predicted winner
Italic -> My vote

> and < denote winners, if it wasn’t obvious enough.

Match 1 (I’m not going to use the match #s on the chart, because well.. they’re confusing, lol.)
Furude Hanyū  < Shana
Nothing unexpected here. Moving along…

Match 2
Misaka Mikoto > Misaka Shiori
Misaka vs Misaka, lol. Anyway, I know very few Shiori fans, so this was unsurprising as well.

Match 3
Katsura Hinagiku > Kurata Sayuri
Mmh. I feel so mainstream; I keep voting for the winners. Where’s the despair?

Match 4
Kawasumi Mai < Nagato Yuki
Oh, here it is. But well.. who didn’t see this coming?

Match 5
Maria < Sakagami Tomoyo
Clannad domination as usual. But Tomoyo is one of the Kyoani characters that I do indeed support, so I’m fine with it. I remember the KBM Maria vs Tomoyo match ended up the same way… (Maria ;__;)

Match 6
Asahina Mikuru < Furude Rika

Match 7
Kamio Misuzu > Kirisame Marisa
Wait, what? There seems to be less Touhou power than I’d thought…

Match 8
Hinamori Amu < Sanzen’in Nagi

Match 9
Index Prohibitorum > Katagiri Yūhi

Match 10
Tsukimiya Ayu < Suigintou

Match 11
Saber Horo
Oh, what the heck? Maybe it’s because I’m not much of a Saber fan, but Horo is 983459237 times more moe than Saber. D:

Match 12
C.C. > Minase Nayuki

Match 13
Ryūgū Rena > Evangeline McDowell

Match 14
Sunohara Mei < Suzumiya Haruhi

Match 15
Ryōgi Shiki > Kasuga “Ōsaka” Ayumu
Ugh.

Match 16
Alice Carroll < Shinku
;_____________________________________;

Match 17
Shameimaru Aya < Hiiragi Tsukasa
I voted for Aya more out of Tsukasa hate than Aya love, but I guess it doesn’t make much of a difference since Touhou isn’t doing so well after all. ):

Match 18
Kinomoto Sakura > Mizunashi Akari
And our Aquamarine for Aquamarine dreams end very suddenly. q______q
(anyone up for Orange Princess for Topaz..?)

Match 19
Hiiragi Kagami > Louise Vallière

Match 20
Yagami Hayate > Vita
Our first same-series match of the tournament goes just as planned. How uneventful.

Match 21
Furukawa Nagisa > Sawatari Makoto
WTF? I mean, I knew Nagisa would win, but these margins are insane! Makoto’s in second last place overall now! fffffffffffff

Match 22
Chiba Kirino < Fate Testarossa
I like Fate. I would consider her one of my favourite characters. This is just me voting out of pity. ): (I’d predicted that Kirino would be last place overall, and so far that seems to be true)

Match 23
Anya Alstreim > Kawazoe Tamaki
This is also a pity vote, although it didn’t tak e much because I dislike Anya.

Match 24
Chii < Hakurei Reimu
Finally, a Touhou character wins a match! (although not by much)

Match 25
Konjiki no Yami < Izumi Konata

Match 26
Remilia Scarlet < Takamachi Nanoha

Match 27
Suiseiseki > Kushieda Minori
What.

Match 28
Nagi < Kawashima Ami
Apparently, even the least popular of the Toradora! girls can beat Nagi…

Match 29
Kōzuki Kallen < Illyasviel von Einzbern
\o/

Match 30
Tōsaka Rin < Aisaka Taiga
;____; I’m sorry Rin.

Match 31
Fujibayashi Kyō > Ibuki Fūko
I don’t like Kyou.

Match 32
Ichinose Kotomi > Patchouli Knowledge

My Totals

Votes 15-17
Predictions 27-5

Matches to take note of:

Matches 7, 17, 26, 32 (Touhou isn’t doing as well as in the prelims)
Match 18 (farewell, Aquamarine for Aquamarine. On the bright side, I can now vote for Hina in round 7 without worry)
Match 21 (what on earth happened here?)
Match 27 (orz)
Match 11 (well, this one’s just unfair)

Miscellaneous thoughts:

  • Touhou’s strength is much, much lower than it was in the preliminaries. Perhaps I should redo my predictions. >_>;
  • More people need to watch ARIA and Okami to Koushinryou. Heck, Kanon too.
  • Nagisa should just go die. Oh wait…
  • Why does WordPress always screw up my formatting?

ISML 2009 – Preliminary Review

17 02 2009

http://www.internationalsaimoe.com

So, the preliminaries are finally over. Well, they were over a long time ago, but I’m a slow writer, okay? D:

Biggest Surprises

Round 1, Group A: Amu over Marisa, Minorin, Patchy, etc.
Nobody, nobody AT ALL, saw this coming.

Round 4, Group D: Illya over Index, Yuuhi, Vita, etc.
I only just started watching F/SN, so I haven’t seen any of Illya yet, but no matter how great of a character she is, I’m sure no one thought she would win by this much, especially against Fall 2008’s Index and Yuuhi, and with Nanoha faction thrown in as well. (let’s ignore the fact that there are no factions in ISML besides kyoanifags.)

Round 8: Kallen over Chiaki, San, everyone.
GTFO OF MY ISML, KOREA.

Series Totals compared with Winning Characters
Format: # characters that made it through prelims (total characters in tournament) – series name.

Character Totals by Series

6 – CLANNAD, Kanon.
5 – Touhou.
4 – Lyrical Nanoha.
3 – Toradora!, Higurashi, Hayate no Gotoku!, Lucky Star, Fate/stay night, Suzumiya Haruhi, Code Geass, Rozen Maiden.
2 – ARIA, Index, Bamboo Blade.
1 – Everything else.

(Shakugan no Shana, Kannagi, Spice and Wolf, Zero no Tsukaima, Air, Chobits, Azumanga Daioh, Card Captor Sakura, Shugo Chara!, Negima, To-LOVE-Ru, Akane-Iro, Kara no Kyoukai.)

We have a ridiculous 19 kyoani characters in this tournament. NINETEEN. Out of sixty-four. What the hell? Just to let you guys know, I only approve of Mai, Misuzu, Tomoyo, and Kotomi. ):

Also, as usual, Shana is a lone fighter. No block voting benefits for her. Although it makes sense, since none of the other SnS characters are worth mentioning. (although Pheles is great)

Personal Opinions

Good:
Alice – ALICE.
Marisa, Reimu, Remilia, Patchy, Aya – lolol touhou
Taiga, Minorin, Ami – Toradora! is love
Nagi – Kannagi is love too
Misuzu – so is Air, despite it being kyoani
Index, Mikoto – lolol Index
Chii – “older” characters can battle too. (:
Osaka – same as above
Illya – haven’t seen F/SN, but same as above. Well, F/SN isn’t that old, I guess. But Illya is cute.

Bad:
Shiori, Makoto – well, Makoto isn’t so bad. There’s just too much kyoani here. And I hate Shiori. >_>;
Shinku – go away Korea
Anya, Kallen – same as above
Shiki – same as above
Mei – no kyoani plz
Yuuhi – lolol Minato > Yuuhi (this is coming from a hardcore KugiRie fan)
Vita – eh

Neutral:
Amu – haven’t seen the series
Hayate – didn’t want more Nanoha in, but she’s not much of a threat and she was bound to get in anyway

Saimoe is srs bsns. D:

Coming soon:

  • ISML 2009 – Main Tournament Predictions
  • ISML 2009 – Character Information

No tentative dates or any of that stuff. All I can say is that they’ll be written before the main tournament starts. Hopefully. Maybe not the second one.

ISML 2009 – Preliminary Round 2 Groups

22 01 2009

http://www.internationalsaimoe.com

Round 2 is here! … but we all know that by now. The round 2 groupings shows us that ISML is consistently making my choices ridiculously easy. I do like most of the characters here, but there’s only a small handful that I would consider absolute favourites – and they’re all in different groups.

Group A – Index, Shirakawa Kotori, Yin, Miyamura Miyako, Kouzuki Kallen, Sawatari Makoto, Amamiya Yuuko, Remilia Scarlet, Shinku, Sakihata Rimi, Nagi.

Group B – Sheryl Nome, Nagase Minato, Vita, Ryougi Shiki, Minami Chiaki, Tsukamoto Yakumo, Kirisame Marisa, Shindou Chihiro, Anya Alstreim, Osaka, Yagami Hayate.

Group C – Sunohara Mei, Kamio Misuzu, Miyako, Kagura, Nogizaka Haruka, Misaka Shiori, Yuno, Kushieda Minori, Ranka Lee, Isayama Yomi, unimportant Bleach girl.

Group D – Seto San, Patchouli Knowledge, Aoba Tsugumi, Misaka Mikoto, Katagiri Yuuhi, Chii, Shihou Matsuri, Zange, Alice Carroll, Kawashima Ami, Illyasviel von Einzbern.

I think this time I’ll be more in-depth about my votes, predictions, comments, etc.

Group A
My vote: Amamiya Yuuko
Predicted Winner: Remilia Scarlet

Amamiya Yuuko > Nagi >  Sawatari Makoto > Miyamura Miyako > Index > Remilia Scarlet > Kouzuki Kallen > Shinku

I think we’ll be seeing another overall last place for Miya-miya again, since she’s placed in the same group as a fellow ef character yet again ): as much as I love Miya-miya, Yuuko is pretty much an auto-vote for me. It would seem that only a tiny percentage of the voters have even heard of the series D: it’s definitely not looking good for Yuuko, my second-slot nomination.

I’m pretty sure that Remi’s victory is secured. The only ones that have a chance at beating her are Nagi, Index, and Shinku, all of which can’t stand up to the power of Touhou. I’m actually not a big Remi fan, but it’s not like that makes much of a difference now. She may have lost the previous round, but there was a KugiRie tsundere involved. After this round, when the rest of the Touhou characters get in, maybe then there will be a proper chance for other characters.

Group B
My vote: Kirisame Marisa
Predicted Winner: Kirisame Marisa

Kirisame Marisa > Osaka > Minami Chiaki > Shindou Chihiro > Nagase Minato > Tsukamoto Yakumo > Yagami Hayate > Vita > Anya Alstreim

Touhou will win. Marisa only lost last round because of split votes with Patchy; her group this round is ridiculously easy, with Anya being the only threat. Normally, the MSLN faction would be a force to reckon with, but votes will be split between Hayate and Vita. Anya got a ridiculous 176 votes last round, which really bothers me, but she should barely be able to put up a fight against Marisa. I don’t see any other major contenders. Chihiro will suffer from lack of ef fans, Chiaki will suffer from lack of Minami-ke fans as well as the crappy sequels, Shiki and Sheryl may get some Korean support, but again, not enough to stand a chance against Touhou and Geass. And everyone hates Minato.

Osaka wasn’t placed in group D again? But I suppose it’d be just as funny if she didn’t get put there at all throughout the rest of the preliminaries. Maybe not.

Group C
My vote: Miyako
Predicted Winner: Kushieda Minori

Miyako > Kamio Misuzu > Kushieda Minori > Nogizaka Haruka > Yuno > Sunohara Mei > Misaka Shiori

There is no Touhou character in this match. Minorin did very well last round, and I would even go so far as to say that she’s even more popular than Taiga. And really, there isn’t much in her way. Hidamari Sketch isn’t well-known enough, and even if it was, votes will be split between Yuno and Miyako. There’s also a triple Key-kyoani, one character from each of their series. Misuzu, the star of Air; Mei, the loli imouto of Clannad; Shiori, the… sick girl, from Kanon. Out of those three I’m only a fan of Misuzu, and I said I wouldn’t be voting for non-Tomoyo/Kotomi Clannad characters anyway. I can see Koreans voting for Kagura and the unimportant Bleach girl, but judging from Taiga’s overwhelming win last round, it won’t do them much good. Ranka and Yomi don’t have enough of a fanbase.

Group D
My vote: Alice Carroll
Predicted Winner: Patchouli Knowledge

Alice Carroll > Seto San > Misaka Mikoto > Patchouli Knowledge > Aoba Tsugumi > Kawashima Ami > Zange > Chii > Shihou Matsuri > Katagiri Yuuhi

There is Touhou present. Therefore, Touhou will win. I do like Patchy, but Alice is auto-vote, second only to Shana. When I was looking at this group, I kept going ‘oh wow, I actually know every character in this one!’ – until I saw Illya. I really should watch F/SN sometime soon. But I know I won’t be able to get around to it. Damn you, airing series. Speaking of which, there’s lots of Fall 2008 here: Mikoto, Tsugumi, Ami, Zange, Yuuhi, and in a way, San (although if you count that way, Patchy is included too).

I don’t really feel like typing anymore, and there isn’t much to say. Patchy will win. I probably won’t care.

I won’t be here from the 24th to the 31st (or something like that), so I’ll be missing the third and fourth preliminary rounds. You guys better not screw anything up. ):

Instead, I will leave you with this message: VOTE ALICE AND YUUKO! D:

Edit: Formatting fixed. WordPress isn’t very smart.

ISML 2009 – Preliminary 1 Results

21 01 2009

http://www.internationalsaimoe.com
Oh God, ISML is becoming more unpredictable than Korea Super Best Moe.

The winners were: Amu, Reimu, Taiga, and Aya.

Amu..I’ll get to that one later. I’ll rant about the easy stuff first.

Taiga was expected. I was pretty damn sure that Yuuko wouldn’t win (ef seems to be at a loss this year. Miya-miya got the least amount of votes overall )): ), and Taiga was my prediction. A perfectly acceptable winner. This year’s KugiRie loli zettai ryouiki tsundere  pettanko, Tenori Taiga! She also got the second-highest amount of overall votes, which is understandable. Moving on…

Reimu! I’m more of a Marisa fan than a Reimu fan, but Reimu is good too. I’m actually fairly surprised that she got the highest overall vote count, but I guess with Korea thrown in the mix, it’s to be expected. That aside, she’s also the only one I voted for who won her match.

Aya…I like Aya and all, but she’s not one of my favourites. I’m more or less just depressed that Alice lost, but I saw that coming from a mile away. But then again, Shoot the Bullet is fun as hell. …I really don’t have much to say here. I knew that Alice would lose, and she lost. A common experience :|

Now..Amu…I think I’m going to strangle someone later. Of all people, AMU?! I was expecting either a Minorin or a Marisa win, both of which would be fine with me, since both are incomparably amazing. I’m trying to figure out who exactly made Amu win. The Koreans? No, they would be voting for Anya/Marisa/Patchy/Shiki. Gaijins? No, they would be voting for Minorin. Japan? Japan doesn’t care. It’s a complete mystery :/
…….
Just THREE more votes, and Marisa would’ve tied…THREEEEEE. If only Patchy had been in Aya’s group instead… ffffffffffffffffffffffff

And some miscellaneous other things:

  • Highest vote count = Reimu = fine
  • Lowest vote count = Miya-miya = DEFINITELY NOT FINE.
  • Why the heck did Anya get so many votes?! Geass fangirls should just stick to Lelouch. Like me. D:

Out of the characters I nominated that made it in:

  • Alice Carroll – 90 votes, 7th in her group. NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
  • Yuuko Amamiya – 94 votes, 7th in her group. NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
  • Miyako – 51 votes, 10th in her group. DEFINITELY NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
  • Misuzu Kamio – 134 votes, tied for second place in her group. There we go :D
  • Chii – 111 votes, 5th in her group. NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

It seems that only my Kyoani nomination has any hope. How depressing.

Okay, I’m done ranting for now. Oh wait, no, I’m not. IF ONE OF THE GROUPS NEXT ROUND IS MADE UP OF ALICE, MARISA, YUUKO, MISUZU, SAN, NAGI, MIKOTO, MIYAKO (HS), HARUKA, AND OSAKA, I AM GOING TO STRANGLE SOMEONE.
…speaking of Osaka, can anyone remind me again why Osaka wasn’t placed in Group D for this round? It would’ve been funny. :/

Votes: 1-3
Predictions: 2-2

ISML 2009 Preliminaries

18 01 2009

http://www.internationalsaimoe.com

I was going to put off making this for a while, but I realized that the preliminaries start..well, tomorrow. >_>;

The nomination period is over (well, it’s been over for a while now), and the top 48 nominated characters have been put into groups for preliminaries.

Group A – Amu Hinamori, Marisa Kirisame, Minori Kushieda, Mikoto Misaka, Miyako Miyamura, an unimportant Bleach girl, Haruka Nogizaka, Patchouli Knowledge, Shiki Ryougi, Rimi Sakihata, Matsuri Shihou, Chihiro Shindou.

Group B – Anya Alstreim, Tsugumi Aoba, Reimu Hakurei, Index, Ami Kawashima, Chiaki Minami, Shiori Misaka, Minato Nagase, Nagi, Kotori Shirakawa, Mei Sunohara, Yuno.

Group C – Taiga Aisaka, Yuuko Amamiya, Chii, Illyasviel von Einzbern (I’m always afraid I’ll spell that wrong), Osaka, Miyako, Ranka Lee, Remilia Scarlet, Sheryl Nome, Shinku, Hayate Yagami, Zange.

Group D – Alice Carroll, Yomi Isayama, Kagura, Misuzu Kamio, Yuuhi Katagiri, Kallen Kouzuki, Makoto Sawatari, San Seto, Aya Shameimaru, Yakumo Tsukamoto, Vita, Yin.

Out of my nominations, five of them made it – Alice, Yuuko, Miyako (of Hidamari Sketch), Misuzu, and Chii. If I’d known that Touhou characters were allowed, I would’ve added Marisa and Reimu though (replacing what was originally Shion Sonozaki and Isumi Saginomiya). Anyway, those two are both in anyway, so it doesn’t really matter now. I’m surprised that I actually know 75% of the characters…perhaps I’m finally managing to keep up properly with saimoe. The only one I’ve never heard of is the Bleach girl (who is only in courtesy of Korea >_>); the rest of them are at least familiar names to me.  It’s also nice to see “older” characters here – Osaka, Kotori, Misuzu, Illya (?) – and not just floods of fall 2008 girls. Although there are many of those as well <_<;

I’ll be voting for Marisa, Reimu, Yuuko, and Alice.
My predictions are: Minorin, Reimu, Taiga, and… Kagura? I’m not exactly sure how many Korean voters there’ll be (this is considering a moderate amount). We could very well see a complete Touhou takeover, or worse, depending on how many Korean fangirls show up.

(but it doesn’t really matter since Shana will just beat them all anyway)

Also, this year I will be anti-Tsukasa, anti-Clannad except for Tomoyo and Kotomi, and anti-Nanoha & co. I will vote for anyone over Tsukasa though (the only exception).
